Varicose Vein Overview

Varicose Veins (the most common type of Venous Disease) are enlarged, dilated, tortuous veins, seen in the Legs.Varicose Veins

Though it may stay quiet for years together in some people, in many it is the cause of much agony, especially when it leads to complications.

The problem develops when veins are unable to maintain flow of impure blood, against gravity, towards the heart. The weak veins fail to push the blood against the pressure of gravity in the standing posture (blood pooling). This is the reason why varicose veins are not usually seen in the upper limb.

In an early stage, the problem is solely due to the pooling of impure blood making the tissues starved of Oxygen.  Prolonged dilation damages the valves, leading to reverse flow of blood.

This back pressure is termed “Venous Hypertension” and is the cause of symptoms. In later stages, this pressure pushes the blood out of the veins – beneath the skin – causing skin and soft tissue damage.

Late-Stage
Late Stage with Colour Changes only            Late Changes with Ulcers

It is estimated that 41% of people over their Lifetime will develop this problem. This problem developed once man evolved from walking from four limbs to walking on just two.  Unfortunately, just like the process of ageing, Modern Medical Science has not been able to correct the cause perfectly. However, the trouble due to the the symptoms – can be completely reversed with modern techniques, provided it is begun in the early phase. Once the complications have set in, it is difficult to have a good outcome.

The latest, most effective, minimally invasive, least time- consuming and safe procedure for treatment of varicose veins is with the use of Laser (EVLT) technology. This is done as a Minimally invasive (Keyhole) Surgical Procedure.

However, just like High BP or Diabetes (blood Sugar), lifelong care is needed to prevent the symptoms from reappearing, after initial treatment. Unlike other problems needing lifelong medicines, this does not need the same!
